A program of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the 2010 Knight Arts Challenge will open for new ideas on February 19, 2010.

The program will award a total of $20 million over five years as challenge grants to fund innovative ideas in the arts benefiting Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The program’s goal is to help transform South Florida by bringing the community together through the arts.

The foundation is seeking ideas and innovation in the arts from nonprofits, companies, and individuals. The program has three criteria for entries: the idea must be about the arts; the project takes place in or benefits South Florida; and the entrant finds other funding to match the Knight Foundation grant.

The program defines “art” as “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination.” The program is seeking projects that strive to create good, high-quality art in the South Florida community. The program is not looking for social projects that utilize art to achieve their goal.

The contest is open to applicants of all nationalities and ages. (If a minor wins, the award will be made to his or her parents or legal guardian or to an organization that agrees to work with individuals under the age of 18 without charge.)

Applicants based outside South Florida are eligible if the program or project will take place in Miami-Dade or Broward, or if it takes place outside of Miami but benefits the arts in Miami. Although the program’s focus is on these two counties, the program is open to outstanding ideas from all of Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties.

Brief applications will be due by March 15, 2010. The deadline for submitting invited full proposals will be May 13, 2010.
