What is progressive social change?
Traditional approaches of nonprofits, communities and coalitions are usually focused on alleviating the symptoms of entrenched social problems. Whle this approach does reduce the impact of suffering, it does little to solve the problem.
Measured Outcomes works with our clients to identify the root causes and build lasting partnerships that address the underlying conditions and developing short term solutions to reduce their impact until lasting change can be achieved. We do this by helping nonprofits, communities, foundations and businesses to work together as trusted partners focused on a coordinated plan to achieve measurable outcomes that benefit all participants and the community at large.
This is our core value as reflected in our company name and motto, “Measured Outcomes – Focused on Results“.
Social change organizing:
- Builds community-based responses, not solutions that affect just a few individuals and leave the underlying social problems intact.
- Changes attitudes, behaviors, laws, policies and institutions to better reflect the values of inclusion, fairness, diversity and opportunity.
- Insists on accountability and responsiveness among institutions, including the government, large corporations, universities and other entities whose policies and actions profoundly affect the living conditions of individuals and communities, whether locally, nationally, or internationally.
- Expands the meaning and practice of “democracy” by involving those closest to social problems in determining their solutions.
Because progressive social change involves making significant changes on a systemic level, groups working on these issues sometimes find it challenging to engage partners that have the money and intellectual resources to help achieve their goals.
- The power of social change organizations is their ability to organize, to educate and to mobilize.
- The power of the private sector are resources and specific expertise in areas related to their core business.
Progressive social change is a profoundly democratic undertaking. At its best, people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, abilities and ages join together with the private sector in developing and implementing creative solutions to social problems. Organizing amplifies the voices of those whose interests are too often overlooked.
Money alone does not bring about change; nor do individuals. But when people band together and form organizations to focus their collective power, social change can happen. When a large number of organizations work together toward a common goal, that’s a movement. Movements make change.
We believe that superior outcomes are achieved when Community and Business interests overlap; and effective community based nonprofits are engaged to coordinate a response.
